Capitalizing on a struggling Lyceum squad, the fever-hit Letran Knights made it three wins in a row after crushing the Pirates, 70-60, in the elimination round of Season 88 of the NCAA at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Despite battling a fever, Kevin Alas lived up to the expectations as he finished the game with 16 points, 8 rebounds, five assists. Jam Cortes and Kevin Racal, also key pieces of the Letran unit, were likewise under the weather coming into this game.
“Naka-dextrose pa si Kevin yesterday. The doctor advised that he can play sparingly, pero sabi ko do not play na lang. Si Racal may fever din two days na. The reason why I’m saying this is because they can easily take a rest naman or a break pero gusto nila makatulong na maka-back-to-back-to-back wins ang team,” said Letran coach Louie Alas.
The Knights improved their record to 4-3 while the Pirates absorbed their fourth straight loss for a 2-7 record.
Collective efforts from Alas, McJour Luib and Mark Cruz in the third canto turned a closely-fought game into a lopsided match, with Letran posting their biggest lead of 12, 56-44, late in the quarter.
The closest that the Pirates got in the final turn was at 60-54 in the last six minutes through the a bucket from Chris Cayabyab.
“Crucial ang points nya sa second half,” said the Knights’ coach on the step-up game of Cruz.
Cayabyab, despite a steady game of 16 points, four rebounds and four assist still could not lift the Pirates from the bottom part of the standings.
