The Philippines national women’s football team is set to play in an invitational tournament in the United States late this year, providing more international exposure for the Malditas.
After last seeing action in the 2011 Asean Football Federation Championships, the Malditas will participate in the 2012 LA Viking Cup from November 21 to December 2 in Fullerton, California along with other national teams such as New Zealand, Haiti and Canada.
“It is very exciting to add Philippines to our inaugural competition”, said Robert Kleinberger, LA Vikings President and Tournament organizer.
The country’s participation in the global invitational tournament is a welcome development for women’s football after international governing body FIFA assured financial and technical support for the creation of the first Women’s Super League in the country.
Currently, the squad coached by Ernie Nierras conducts weekly tournaments, as well as football clinics in provinces.
The Malditas, ranked 88th in the world, are also preparing for the upcoming 2012 AFF Women’s Championships in Vietnam this September.
