Filipino-American UFC fighter Mark Muñoz dominated opponent Luke Barnatt in a three-round unanimous decision in front of a partisan crowd of his countrymen before making an emotional retirement speech during the UFC Fight Night Manila card that featured Frankie Edgar and Urijah Faber in the main event on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The 37-year-old Muñoz put on a vintage performance, using his wrestling, ground and pound, and his standup to defeat his younger, taller opponent in his farewell fight.

He won 30-27, 29-28, 30-27 in the judges’ scorecards.

‘The Filipino Wrecking Machine’ finished his UFC career with a 9-6 record, including three consecutive losses before this fight. He was never able to fight for the title but fought some of the best in the middleweight division, including current champion Chris Weidman, who won the title on fight after defeating Muñoz.

”Pilipinas. Mahal ko kayong lahat. Maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong suporta at tiwala sa akin. Thank you very much, Philippines. I will represent you guys from the bottom of my heart,” he told the crowd afterwards.

Muñoz said he was grateful for the opportunity to impact lives in his MMA career and expressed his willingness to come back to the country and give back to the sport.

“I will cherish these memories for a lifetime. We all have a story. Mixed martial arts has been the story of my career. You might get hit by unforeseen things, you might get hit by – you get cancer, you get diabetes. But you life doesn’t stop there, you get back up and and you keep competing to the best of your abilities.”

In the main event, the former lightweight champion Edgar overwhelmed Faber, shutting out his opponent, winning all five rounds on all three of the judges’ scorecards.

Filipinos Mark Eddiva and Roldan Sangcha-an both lost their fights in the events. Eddiva lost a split decision to Levan Makashvili on the main card while Sangcha-an submitted to a rear-naked choke in the preliminary card.

Fil-American Philippe Nover made his first UFC appearance in five years, returning to the Octagon to clinch a split decision win over Yui Chul Nam.
