Marquez may fight for title versus top Pinoy challenger Gesta
From his Las Vegas lair, Top Rank chief Bob Arum told InterAKTV on Saturday that plans are afoot for Juan Manuel Marquez to meet Mercito Gesta, a US-based Filipino fighter, in a 12-round match for the soon-to-be-vacated WBO junior-welterweight crown on July 14 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Arum added that on the same night, Nonito Donaire will defend his WBO super-bantam belt against Mexican veteran Cristian Mijares, instead of Victor Terrazas.
“Terrazas is fighting on June 9 so it’ll be Mijares for Donaire,” said Arum.
Marquez is best known as the Meixcan counter-puncher who has Manny Pacquiao’s number.
“It’ll be a huge show,” said Arum, trumpeting that the event will again rekindle the storied Philippines versus Mexico boxing rivalry.
