Rodel Mayol has decided to pull out of his fight defending champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez for the World Boxing Association (WBA) flyweight crown on Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) in Ciudad Obregon. The decision comes after Marquez apparently did not make the flyweight limit of 112 lbs during the official weigh-in held Friday. In contrast, Mayol tipped the scales at 112 lbs.
Mike Koncz, who manages Mayol under MP Promotions, said Marquez clearly failed to make the weight. Even though Marquez was declared as having made it, Koncz said he doubted the authenticity of the claims.
Koncz said “Marquez’s feet was hanging out (on the scales) when he tipped in.”
Richie Mepranum, who was scheduled to fight in the undercard, was asked to substitute for Mayol against Marquez.
Mepranum had beaten Marquez two years ago in Texas on points but the Mexican exacted payback this time, winning the ten-rounder on a decision.
