Dennis Orcullo, last year’s WPA Player of the Year and a former world champion, salvaged a victory to keep the Filipinos’ hopes alive in the China Open pool tournament.

Orcullo, a former World 8-Ball titlist, displayed the heart of a champion, coming back from a 6-1 deficit before eking out a pulsating win in a hill-hill encounter against local bet Wang Ming, 9-8.

But while Orcullo was able to survive another tough match, Carlo Biado and inaugural Women’s World 10-Ball champion Rubilen Amit got booted out early in the tournament.

Biado, one of three Filipinos in the top 15 of the world rankings, was eliminated by former two-time world junior champion Ko Pin Yi of Chinese Taipei, 9-6.

Amit also kissed her hopes goodbye as she was defeated by Wu Zhu Ting of Chinese Taipei, 7-2.
