Officials of different PBA teams are still mulling options for the format of the season-ending Governors’ Cup to accommodate necessary preparations of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team for the FIBA Asia Championship in August.
“There are many scenarios being studied and considered,” wrote commissioner Chito Salud in a text message to InterAKTV.
“Let’s not preempt our governors and team owners. I am confident that the final arrangement to be arrived at will be designed primarily to permit our national team to train together and jell sufficiently to be competitive in the FIBA tournament, which our country will host. Obviously, national interest will be the major consideration in this case.”
A member of the PBA Board of Governors who requested anonymity said Salud will meet with SMART-Gilas coach Chot Reyes about the availability of players for the national squad. The source added that board members would still need to confer with their team owners about the matter.
“It’s still up for discussion, including the timing of third conference,” said the board member.
