The University of Cebu Webmasters took on the personality of its head coach Roel Gomez to claim their first win the PCCL National Championships semifinal round.
The Webmasters converted 16 three-pointers in the game to beat San Sebastian College, 92-71, Thursday to notch their first win in the semis at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.
UC was just unstoppable from three-point range after a sluggish start to its final four campaign as it goes in the battle-for-third match on Monday on a high note.
It was the first time a Visayan team won in the PCCL since University of Visayas beat STI College in 2007.
“This is the kind of game kaya namin na-dominate ang Cebu,” said Gomez, who in his heydays in the PBA was a three-point sniper himself in nine years with Alaska and Pop Cola.
Edward Pao had 25 points on seven-of-12 from behind the arc while Robinson Mohammad had 20 points including six-of-14 from three-point range for the Webmasters.
Big man Jun Mar Fajardo had 20 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks and finally found the presence of the supporting crew.
“Naglaro kami ng may focus at fluid ‘yung opensa. Siguro, tinake din kami ng San Sebastian lightly pero ito ‘yung game na nag-step up talaga sila lahat kasi mahirap ‘yung konti lang ang naglalaro,” said Gomez.
A former three-point king, Gomez is also a proven winner in the PBA with 11 titles and was a member of the 1996 Grand Slam team with Alaska thanks to his three-point arsenal that he now teaches with the Webmasters.
“Ang sikreto lang namin, 300 shots per day or more dahil habit kasi yan eh. Para sa akin, lahat ng shooters, dapat visualize lang and establish ‘yung footing, pagtingin sa ring, tira na,” Gomez said.
The Webmasters salvaged their campaign after a 43-point loss to UAAP champion Ateneo Monday and an 83-77 defeat against San Beda last Tuesday.
Despite the loss, the Stags kept their twice-to-beat advantage intact and will await the winner of the Ateneo-San Beda match on Friday to determine their opponents in the finals on Monday.
Pao hit back-to-back threes during the third-quarter wind-up as UC took a 69-57 lead. The Webmasters hit four more triples in the fourth including a triple by Mohammad that set the biggest margin of the game at 87-61.
Calvin Abueva had 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Stags.
Meanwhile, Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Educational Foundation defeated La Salle Greenhills, 85-77, in a charity game.
