Former Powerade Tigers coach Bo Perasol has asked for a release from his live contract to coach the Ateneo Blue Eagles next season.
GlobalPort, the league’s newest team, assumed Perasol’s contract after the firm’s purchase of the Tigers from Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. The coach, who had one more year left on his contract, asked for a release from his contract from Powerade management, and the request was relayed to Mikee Romero, who owns GlobalPort.
Romero confirmed the news on Friday.
Ateneo had been searching for a new coach after this season to take over for Norman Black, who is leaving for the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in the PBA. Perasol is no stranger to college basketball, having coached his alma mater University of the Philippines on an interim basis in the 1990s.
Perasol piloted the Tigers to a Cinderella runner-up finish in last season’s Philippine Cup, engineering a rebuilding that saw Powerade go from minnows into contenders.
