KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Tigers overcome their first hurdle at the group stage of the Axiata Cup by beating the Philippines 3-0 at the Cheras Badminton Stadium here Friday night.
Malaysia’s Muhammad Hafiz Hashim proved too strong for the Philippines’ import from Germany, Marc Zwieble, who bowed out 21-9, 21-6 in less than 30 minutes in the first singles. Hafiz, the 2003 All-England champion said Zwieble played a defensive game, allowing him to control the match.
The Malaysian men’s doubles pair of Goh V.Shem and Lim Khim Wah, however, had a tough game against Paul Jefferson Vivas and Ronel Estanislao who offered resistance before bowing out 16-21, 21-11, 21-8.
Malaysia’s second singles player Mohd Arif Abdul Latif made sure Malaysia won the group match by beating Antonio Benjamin Gadi 21-14, 21-16.
Earlier, Indonesia’s back-up squad Indonesia Rajawali beat Thailand 3-0. The Malaysian Tigers are scheduled to meet Thailand Saturday.
