Petron has already declared that it will take 6-foot-10 slotman June Mar Fajardo with the first overall pick in the draft. When it happens, Fajardo will be the 12th center selected first overall since the PBA instituted a draft in 1985. Here’s the full list:
1985 – Sonny Cabatu; 1986 – Rey Cuenco; 1988 – Jack Tanuan; 1989 – Benjie Paras; 1991 – Alex Araneta; 1993 – Jun Limpot; 1995 – Dennis Espino; 1996 – Marlou Aquino; 1997 – Andy Seigle; 1998 – Danny Ildefonso; 2002 – Yancy De Ocampo
Cabatu, Tanuan, and De Ocampo had long careers as part-time starters, but never became stars. Cuenco blossomed later in his career. Seigle was a star, but never became a franchise player. Limpot and Aquino had great debuts, but fizzled later in their careers. Espino became a solid, reliable franchise talent. Alex Araneta battled injuries and was a bust. Paras and Ildefonso each won two Most Valuable Player awards.
Which direction would Fajardo’s career likely go?
