The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters could not win it in regulation but took care of business in the extra period as they defeated the Mahindra Floodbuster, 99-95, in an exciting overtime clash in the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Rain or Shine saw a seven-point lead slip away in the fourth quarter after an explosive showing from Mahindra’s Gary David but was able to force overtime on a late run before claiming the win.

Import Shawn Taggart led the way for Rain or Shine with 29 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Beau Belga and James Yap each scored 12 markers while Jeff Chan added 10 markers for the Elasto Painters, who are now 2-0 for the new conference.

The team led by seven points, 77-70, with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before the complexion of the game changed significantly with the entry of David, who scored all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter.

‘El Granada’ started things off with a three-pointer, 77-73, though that was quickly answered by Rain or Shine’s Jewel Ponferada, who hit a triple of his own.

David then drained another three from the corner before making a tough pull-up jumper, 80-78. He made another long two to tie the ballgame, 80-all.

White then split from the free throw line and Philip Paniamogan knocked down two more charities to make it 83-80 before David capped his explosive performance with his third triple of the period, 86-80.

All in all, Mahindra scored 13 unanswered points as Rain or Shine went silent for nearly five full minutes.

But the Elasto Painters were not out of it yet as Belga hit a jumper and Chan knocked down a pair of free throws to come back to within two points.

After White made another bucket, Shawn Taggart and Maverick Ahanmisi made free throws to tie the game at 88-apiece.

The ball went back to Rain or Shine after Taggart’s missed free throw went out of bounds off of White’s touch but the Mahindra import made up for it by swatting a potential go-ahead layup by Jeff Chan. White could not win the game in regulation, though, as his last shot missed before time expired.

In overtime, Gabe Norwood made a big steal that the Elasto Painters turned into a Raymond Almazan layup on the break.

Mahindra scored five straight on an Alex Mallari layup and a Bong Galanza trey but Almazan made two free throws and Taggart scored in the paint. Chan then drilled a triple to make it 97-93 with 1:38 remaining.

White hit two free throws that Taggart quickly got back, 99-95, but the Floodbuster got a chance when Almazan was whistled for a deliberate foul inside the final minute.

White, though, missed both free throws and Mahindra could not score on their extra possession.

Rain or Shine could not make a bucket on their next offensive but the Elasto Painters – including Ahanmisi, who lost his shoe at midcourt – made a strong defensive stand to seal the win.
