Terrence Romeo dominated early and Arvie Bringas made sure his teammate’s effort wouldn’t go to waste as FEU made a huge run in the fourth quarter that got the Tamaraws past the Adamson Falcons, 76-68, in the second round of UAAP Season 75 Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
Romeo scored a UAAP seniors career-high 27 points, alongside three rebounds and five assists while Bringas scored all seven of his points in the last three minutes as part of a big 18-3 run for FEU to close the game.
Romeo scored 22 of his total in a sizzling first half performance that included six three-pointers, helping the Tamaraws come back from 10 points down to tie the game at halftime.
But behind the excellent play of Eric Camson, that Falcons opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run that gave them a seven-point lead at the 4:56 mark. Camson scored the first four points, then capped the run with a triple that barely beat the shot clock as Adamson took a 65-58 lead.
Anthony Hargrove then scored on two consecutive baskets, a putback and a layup off a strong drive, for FEU and RR Garcia drilled home a three that tied the game at 65-apiece.
Then it was Bringas’ turn to take over. He gave the Tamaraws the lead back with a bucket with about three minutes remaining. After Adamson got a stop on an FEU offensive possession, Bringas picked off the passing lane in the backcourt and scored two more points on a strong finish while getting fouled.
He knocked in the extra free throw to give FEU a five-point advantage, 70-65, the Tamaraws’ biggest lead of the game at that point.
The Falcons got a three-point play in reverse after Don Trollano split his charities and Adamson scored off of an offensive board to get to within two, 70-68.
But Bringas attacked early and scored another crucial basket as he pushed FEU’s lead up to four, 72-68, with just 36.8 seconds left. RR Garcia then hit two free throws and a basket with 1.3 seconds left to seal the final margin.
Camson finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds in a losing effort.
FEU raised their win-loss mark to 7-2, behind just Ateneo at 7-1. Adamson fell to 1-8 for the season.
