The San Beda Red Lions continued its NCAA winning streak against the Letran Knights with a 68-62 victory in Season 88 action Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Apart from improving its win-loss record to 10-2, San Beda also notched its 13th straight league victory over Letran, a streak that dates back to July 25, 2007.
The Knights absorbed their sixth defeat against six wins. They remain at solo fifth place, a game behind fourth-place Perpetual Help.
Letran, with a complete lineup featuring Raymond Almazan and Jonathan Belorio who missed the team’s first round match against San Beda, came out firing, taking a 21-17 lead after the first quarter.
But San Beda’s defense held firm in the second period, allowing the Red Lions to take a 43-32 lead at the break.
A massive second half attack by the Knights in the third quarter paved the way for a 13-0 run led by Kevin Alas tied the game at 45-all with 4:05 remaining in the period.
But back-to-back three-pointers from Baser Amer halted Letran’s momentum, with the Red Lions eventually regaining a seven-point cushion at the end of three quarters.
The Davao native Amer finished with 11 points and six assists.
Letran was held scoreless for over six minutes in the final period, before Jun Alas’ basket at the 3:58 mark sparked an 11-2 run for the Knights, but was not enough to snap their winning drought against the Red Lions.
The Knights were not able to stop Ola Adeogun’s production, with San Beda’s Nigerian reinforcement finishing with 12 points and ten rebounds. Almazan, who was tasked to contain Adeogun, only managed to collar five rebounds, a far cry from his 15 in the Knights’ previous game against the Altas.
“Mas maganda ang muntik matalo kaysa muntik manalo,” said Red Lions coach Ronnie Magsanoc.
Art Dela Cruz had 14 points and seven rebounds for San Beda.
Kevin Alas finished the game with 16 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals to lead the Knights.
