San Sebastian to receive special citation in college hoops awards
San Sebastian College will be given a special citation when the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps and SMART host the Collegiate Basketball Awards on January 21 at the Gateway Suites in Quezon City.
The Stags will receive the Distinction of Excellence plum for becoming the first NCAA team to win the Philippine Collegiate Champions League when they beat Ateneo last December.
The PCCL title was a redemption of sorts for the Stags’ campaign after bowing to the San Beda Red Lions in the NCAA season despite a 15-0 start.
The award is one of many plums the Stags will receive in the annual event organized by sportswriters covering the collegiate beat.
Ronald Pascual will be feted with the Impact Player award for his exploits in the recent season along with center Ian Sangalang, who will share the Mr. Efficiency award with Far Eastern University’s Aldrech Ramos for their contributions offensively and defensively.
Ramos’s teammate RR Garcia will also be cited the Court General plum after his efforts helped the Tamaraws gain a finals spot in the UAAP for the second straight time while Nico Salva of Ateneo and Dave Marcelo of San Beda will be honored for their solid contributions during the championship series of their respective leagues.
Also receiving awards are the Ateneo backcourt tandem of Emman Monfort and Kirk Long and Letran guard Kevin Alas.
Monfort is set to receive the Maynilad Super Senior trophy for his point guard duties for the Blue Eagles in his final year with the team.
Long, meanwhile, will be honored for his stellar play on defense while Alas will be given the Energy Player award.
The awardees will join Mythical Five winners Calvin Abueva of San Sebastian, National University’s Bobby Ray Parks, Ateneo’s Greg Slaughter and Kiefer Ravena and San Beda’s Garvo Lanete, UAAP Coach of the Year Norman Black of Ateneo and NCAA Coach of the Year Frankie Lim.
