SEA Games: Pinoy netters remain in hunt for men’s, mixed doubles gold

Tennis got a last hope of claiming at least a gold medal after the Philippine men’s doubles and mixed doubles teams made their way to the finals Sunday in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia.

Cecil Mamiit and Treat Huey beat the Vietnamese pair of Do Minh Quan and Ngo Quang Huy of Vietnam, 6-0, 4-6, 10-2, in the doubles and will face Thailand’s Danai Udomchoke and Kittiphong Wachira in the finals.

Huey and Denise Dy, meanwhile, defeated Grace Sari Ysidora and Aditya Harry Sason of Indonesia, 6-1, 6-2, in the mixed doubles event to likewise advance to the gold medal match.

With the pair of victories, the Philippine tennis team can still duplicate their two-gold medal haul in 2009 after the gold winners in the Laos SEA Games failed to defend their crown.

Mamiit settled for the bronze medal in the men’s singles, an event he has ruled since 2005 in Manila.

The men’s team event of Mamiit, Huey and Jeson Patrombon also failed to defend their crown after only claiming a silver medal bowing to Indonesia in the final.

Anna Clarice Patrimonio (women’s singles) and the women’s team of Patrimonio, Dy and Marian Jade Capadocia also wrested the bronze medal.
