Former SMART-Gilas Pilipinas team captain Chris Tiu banners a rookie draft that is expected to yield a franchise big man and several impact players as the deadline for application ended at 5 p.m. Friday.
Tiu joined a list of players that includes former San Miguel Beermen Philippines center June Mar Fajardo, reigning NCAA Most Valuable Player Calvin Abueva, and top Filipino-American prospect Cliff Hodge.
Other notables in the list are former D-League MVP Vic Manuel, Fil-Ams Alex Mallari, Keith Jensen, and Chris Ellis, ex-SMART-Gilas stalwarts JR Cawaling and Aldrech Ramos, San Sebastian gunner Ronald Pascual, and athletic former San Beda center Dave Marcelo.
Petron, which got the top choice in an earlier trade from Air 21, is expected to tab Fajardo. Alaska owns the second pick, while Petron also owns the third choice that was originally from Barako Bull. Meralco, Barako Bull (from Petron), Barangay Ginebra (from Powerade), Rain or Shine, Ginebra again, B-MEG, and GlobalPort, the new Mikee Romero-owned team that bought the Powerade franchise, complete the first round.
The draft is slated August 19, 4 p.m. at Robinsons Midtown Manila.
