University of the East foiled Ateneo’s bid for a sweep of the UAAP Season 74 badminton tournament following the Lady Warriors’ 3-2 win over the Lady Eagles, 3-2, on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
The Lady Eagles gained a head start after Gelita Castillo booked a 21-18, 21-5 victory over May Lawrence Pamorada in the opening singles.
UE won the second singles with Rochelle Andres scoring a 21-16, 14-21, 21-19 victory over Dia Nicole Magno, and took a 2-1 lead after UE’s Fatima Cruz and Kimverly Gatpolintan overwhelmed Carla Lizardo and Michelle Eunice Roxas, 21-9, 21-13, in the first doubles, the Lady Eagles fought back behind Castillo and Magno, who beat Andres and Pamorada, 22-20, 21-12, in the second doubles to forge a deciding singles.
Cruz slipped past Lisa Encarnacion, 21-15, 21-18, to help bring the trophy to Recto. It was UE’s second women’s title in three years.
“Masarap itong championship na ito dahil galing kami mula sa kulelat [0-3 start this season]. Nagawa naming mag-adjust habang tumatakbo ang tournament, hardwork lang,” said Cruz.
De La Salle finished third in the season after a 3-2 win over FEU.
Cruz was named women’s MVP, while UE mentor Rocky Magnaye was Coach of the Year. Castillo is the Rookie of the Year and Andres took home the Most Improved Player honors.
