The UE Red Warriors came back from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to edge La Salle, 85-83, for a big comeback win in Season 76 action Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Roi Sumang led UE with 21 points while Ralf Olivares scored six of his eight points in the last 46 seconds as the Red Warriors won a second consecutive game to improve to 3-3.
La Salle led by 10 points, 68-58, with 8:30 remaining in the fourth period but watched as UE came back to tie the game at 73-all on two free throws by Sumang after a 15-5 run.
The Green Archers opened up a four-point lead, 81-77, on a three-pointer from Thomas Torres.
But Olivares hit two free throws then forced Torres to a turnover in the backcourt. He completed the key sequence by hitting a three-pointer to give UE back the lead, 82-81, with 43 seconds remaining.
Dan Alberto then hit two more from the charity stripe to make it 84-81.
La Salle’s Luigi Dela Paz seemingly hit a three-pointer to tie the game with 17 seconds to play but he had a foot on the line and the shot was only counted as two points.
Olivares then split from the line and the Red Warriors were able to get a stop on the final possession to escape with the win.
It was the second straight game that La Salle lost while holding a double-digit lead in the fourth period.
