The University of the East women’s volleyball team stunned National University in five sets, 24-26, 25-21, 25-27, 25-16, 15-5, in the UAAP at the Fil Oil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Warriors did everything right while the Lady Bulldogs did the opposite as they gave first-year coach Boy Dalistan his first victory this season.
UE clinched the match after starting the fifth set with an overly impressive, even rare, 11-0 lead to take the win in a lengthy two-hour, seven-minute match against Final Four contender NU.
“Nag-focus lang kami sa fifth set,” said Dalistan, who replaced Vangie De Jesus during the offseason.
The Lady Warriors now have an even 1-1 slate.
UE had contributions from everyone with Sarina Faith Bulan leading the Lady Warriors with 18 points. Sheisa Nebrida had 14 points, Mary Rosale had 12 points and Leuseht Dawis had 11 points.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-1) looked sluggish even in the early goings of the match needing an extra session to nab the first and third sets.
But momentum sided with the Lady Warriors in the fourth as they dominated the set to force a decider.
Cai Nepomuceno had a game-high 23 points while Lucelle Bayron had 13 points but NU dropped to its first loss after sweeping University of the Philippines in the opener.
In the second game, Adamson handed University of Santo Tomas its second loss with a 25-18, 18-25, 28-26, 23-25 win.
Mayette Zapanta led the Lady Falcons with 20 points, Pau Soriano had 14, Angela Quinlog had 13 and Sheila Pineda added 13 including the game-clinching kill.
Adamson improved to 2-1 sharing third place with Ateneo.
UST, last season’s runner-up, dropped to 0-2.
