UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones made a successful defense of his championship after scoring a unanimous decision victory over challenger Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 182 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jones was ahead, 49-46, in all three of the judges’ scorecards to make an eighth defense of his 205-lb. division belt, a title he has held for nearly four years.
He was even able to score multiple takedowns on Cormier – a former Olympian in wrestling.
The champion provided his usual fireworks on the feet, landing with elbows and kicks to punish the top light heavyweight contender, who offered a stiff challenge in the early rounds of the fight. Jones came up big in the championship rounds, taking Cormier down twice in the fourth round and imposing his will in the fifth to come away with the win.
In the rest of the main card, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and Brad Tavares both picked up unanimous decision wins, winning all three rounds in their respective fights against Myles Jury and Nate Marquardt.
Japanese flyweight Kyoji Horiguchi and Hector Lombard were also victorious in their main card bouts.
