UFC 188: Fabricio Werdum submits Cain Velasquez to win undisputed heavyweight title

Interim champion Fabricio Werdum submitted returning UFC champ Cain Velasquez with a guillotine choke in the third round to become the undisputed title-holder in the heavyweight division in the main event of UFC 188 on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in Mexico City.

Werdum flaunted his improved striking yet again, hurting Velasquez with big knees and punches in the standup before securing the submission.

It was Velasquez’s first appearance in the Octagon in nearly two years after getting sidelined with a torn meniscus, and he didn’t show his trademark cardio in high-altitude Mexico City.

Werdum, the two-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion, outperformed Velasquez on the feet, forcing the champion’s camp to ask for a takedown despite that playing into Werdum’s strengths.

That led to the interim champ locking in the choke and ending the fight at 2:15 mark of the third round.

In the co-main event, Eddie Alvarez won his grudge match against Gilbert Melendez, overcoming from a swollen left eye sustained in Round 1 to win the last two for the victory.

He used his wrestling to neutralize Melendez in the second and third rounds and even got some good shots in, including a spinning elbow, to bloody his opponent late in the fight.

Alvarez prevailed by split decision, netting his first UFC win.
