The UFC announced on Thursday their historic first ever fight card in the Philippines, a ‘UFC Fight Night’ event that will be held on May 16th at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion had long been rumored to have interest in holding an event in the country but nothing had come to fruition until now.
“We are thrilled to be kicking off our Asia series in Manila this year. The UFC has a loyal and passionate fan base in the Philippines and we’re looking forward to bringing the very best of mixed martial arts to Manila for the first time,” said UFC executive vice president and UFC Asia general manager Ken Berger.
The UFC had taken previous forays into the Asian market, with events in Macao, Singapore and Tokyo. They brought several fighters to Manila for media tours, attracting thousands of fans for activities like open workouts.
The UFC Fight Night card, though, will be a much bigger deal than their previous Manila events. It will be broadcast all over the world, giving the world a chance to see the Filipino fans’ passion for the sport.
The fight card is a long way from being completed although it is expected to feature some of the Filipino talents on the UFC roster.
The promotion will be hosting the event in partnership with SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Inc.
