United Football League squad Global FC will participate in this year’s Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup, marking the first time that the Philippines will be sending a team in the competition.
The President’s Cup is a tournament among clubs from the emerging football nations in Asia which won their respective domestic leagues. Global was chosen to represent the Philippines after winning the League title in the UFL last season.
“Looking forward to Global FC’s participation in the AFC President’s Cup 2013…” Palami wrote on Twitter Thursday, posting a letter from the AFC addressed to the Philippine Football Federation confirming Global FC’s stint in the tournament.
Aside from the Philippines’ Global FC, the President’s Cup will also feature clubs from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka and Turkmenistan.
While Global will debut the country’s participation in the President’s Cup, this is not the first time that a Philippine club joined an international football competition. Last year, the Loyola Meralco Sparks played in the 2012 Singapore Cup, finishing fourth out of 16 teams from various clubs in Southeast Asia.
The group stages of the President’s Cup is slated from May 2 to May 12, with the final stages scheduled from September 23 to September 29.
