As it wraps up its successful third year, the United Football League said it would be adding a tournament to its calendar next season in addition to the UFL Cup and regular league play.
The Super Cup, which will be played in May next year, will feature the top 10 teams from the Division Once and top six teams from the Division Two.
In its effort to bring the UFL to the provinces, the Super Cup will also feature a home-and-away format to allow province-based teams, such as Division Two squad Cebu Queen City United, to play in their own home turf.
New rules on foreign players would also be applied to the Super Cup. Only five foreign players would be allowed for each team, which would then be reduced to four the following year. The league hopes that the rule will eventually be implemented to the whole season in its effort to be recognized in international play.
“It’s a gradual change although we’re gonna try to forward that because we want to play in the President’s Cup,” UFL assistant technical director Ritchie Gannaban said. The President’s Cup is a club tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation for emerging football nations.
The UFL also plans to form a youth football league which will develop young football players in the country.
The country’s premier football league saw drastic developments in its third year, thanks to the growing popularity of football in the country. Aside from inking a historic five-year television deal with AKTV this year, the UFL also got boost from the arrival of some members of the Philippine national men’s football team, such as Azkals stars Phil and James Younghusband among others.
