The UST Growling Tigers kept their hold of the league lead after dispatching defending champion NU Bulldogs, 65-57, in UAAP Season 78 action Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.
Kevin Ferrer and Karim Abdul chipped in 13 markers apiece to pace the Tigers which improved to 8-1 to keep pace with the FEU Tamaraws for a share of the top spot.
Ed Daquioag also had 10 points, four of which came in a crucial stretch late in the game that helped UST secure the win.
NU was still leading by a point, 55-54, with over four minutes left in the game when the Growling Tigers scored four unanswered courtesy of jumpers from Louie Vigil and Daquioag.
After an NU basket, Daquioag scored a tip-in to put the Tigers ahead, 60-57. Abdul then sank two free throws with 26 seconds left to seal the win.
Gelo Alolino scored 20 points to pace the Bulldogs (3-6) which came back from a 14-point deficit.
In the first game, Ateneo made quick work of lowly Adamson, 87-72.
Kiefer Ravena fired 20 points and eight boards to lead the Blue Eagles which dominated the game, building a 21-point lead at some point.
The Blue Eagles now have a 5-4 slate for a share of third place, while Adamson remained at the cellar with a 1-8 card.
