Internationalists Shaneen Sia and Marvin Gabriel made UST proud with a gold medal each in individual play and another mint in the mixed pairs in the demonstration event of poomsae in UAAP Season 74 taekwondo.
Sia and Gabriel, bronze medalists in the 6th World Taekwondo Federation World Poomsae Championships, beat University of the Philippines for the top of the podium in the mixed pairs, with Ateneo and Far Eastern University settling for bronze medals.
Sia bagged the women’s individual gold medal, beating Frances Beatriz Alarilla of Ateneo (silver) and Patricia Sembrano of De La Salle and Christine Baldonado of UP (bronze).
Gabriel defeated Anthony Matias of UP (silver) and Isiah Singson of FEU and Raymond Bermejo of Ateneo (bronze) in men’s individual play.
UP wrested the gold medal and UST the silver and Ateneo and FEU the bronze medals in the men’s team poomsae event. In women’s team poomsae, FEU clinched gold with De La Salle settling for silver and UP and UST the bronze medals.
The taekwondo competition resumes Saturday also at the Arena in San Juan.
The defending champion Green Archers lead the men’s division with a 3-0 card, followed by the Growling Tigers with 2-0 and the Tamaraws with 2-1.
Reigning women’s titlist UST, meanwhile, is locked in a three-way tie for first with De La Salle and UP on 2-1 cards.
