COTABATO CITY – The world champion dragon boat team that conquered seven world records and won three world championships headed by Marcia Cristobal visited Lake Lanao during the celebration of three milestones in the history of Ganassi, Lanao Del Sur.
Ganassi mayor Al-Rashid Macapodi honored the visit of the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation and the champion dragon boat team that shared their knowledge and expertise in teaching the people of Lanao how to become world champions in the sport.
Mayor Macapodi expressed that the coming of dragon boating in the province and the region will provide economic development to the municipality by creating a livelihood program through dragon boat-making and the opening of Lake Lanao as a sports, leisure, cultural tourism center of ARMM through local, regional, national and international dragon boat competitions in the future.
He also added that the municipality can take pride in the fact that the seeds of dragon boat in the Autonomous Region were planted in the lake shores of Ganassi and wished the dream of making Lanao one of the best destinations for sports and tourism in Mindanao comes true.
“I know many of you have second thoughts of coming to Lanao considering the negative publicity and news you have been seeing, hearing and reading in TV, radio and newspapers. I salute you for the courage you have shown and your commitment to share your knowledge and skills about dragon boat to our people. As I welcome you to the heart of the Muslim land and the summer capital of the South, may the beautiful scenery you have passed along the way and the enchanting Lake Lanao that beacons you to paddle in its waters erase all your worries and anxieties as we give the best of the Maranao Culture,” Mayor Macapodi said.
The event was also witnessed by Lanao Del Sur governor Bombit Adiong, officials from DILG and Department of Tourism, 103rd Brigade commander Col. Daniel Lucero, Provincial Director Police Supt. Romeo Magsalos, LGU’s, guests, participants, and the people of Ganassi.
The dragon boat team supported every team participant during the boat racing competition and the championship belonged to the 51st Infantry Battalion from Malabang headed by Col. Marlon Yadao, AFP.
