Most people just know Sunday’s AKTV Center guest Rosalio “Yoyong” Martirez as a comedian. He would always be in Vic Sotto movies, playing Bosing’s goofy cousin who is prone to overreaction. Vic would ask him, “Galit ka?” to which Yoyong would suddenly turn gentle and reply, “Hinde, nagpapaliwanag lang.”
A lot of younger fans may not know that Martirez was a great basketball player. He was part of the Philippine national team that competed in the 1972 Munich Olympic, which was the last Filipino squad to participate in the Games. He went on to become a star in the Philippine Basketball Association for the Royal Tru-Orange franchise that later became San Miguel, starring for the team alongside center Manny Paner during the Crispa-Toyota era. He was the leader of the San Miguel team long before it became the PBA’s premiere franchise.
