PBA legend Robert Jaworski best personified Barangay Ginebra’s never-say-die spirit, but not everybody knew that he was considered as the best rebounding guard in the 42-year-history of the league.

Someone from today’s Gin Kings is about to follow in The Living Legend’s footsteps: Scottie Thompson.

In an interview with InterAksyon, Jaworski shared his thoughts on the do-it-all guard who has captured the hearts of the Ginebra faithful due to his superb rebounding skills.

“That’s how everybody should work,” Jaworski said. “You’re not only out there to shoot, but you’ve got to go for that rebound and do everything you can. That’s a very good attitude.

“I hope he continuously do that. He’s gonna go places.”

Thompson, despite standing just 6’1″, has become one of the league’s top rebounders. Currently averaging 5.91 boards a game, he even led locals in that department at one point.

Jaworski said he is “amazed” by how Thompson outboxes his bigger opponents.

“When you’re there, you’ve got to do what the situation calls,” he said. “That includes running, jumping, boxing out, and rebounding, which is very important.

“It’s amazing because he’s not one of those guys who are over 6-5.”

Jaworski, the first-ever playing coach in the PBA, added that Thompson will be a more complete player if he develops a consistent jumper.

“From time to time, he has to make a decision to shoot as well,” he said. “When you get that ball, it’s not that you’re looking for somebody to pass. If you have that opportunity, take it.”
