UP Diliman unveiled an Oblation with conch-shaped lantern elements during the first week of December to officially usher the Christmas season.

According to its creator Toym Imao, the conch, or budyong, symbolizes the university’s call for the community to gather not just for the festivities brought by the season but to also “move against imminent threat to the liberties of the Filipino people.”

In line with this year’s theme “Himig ng Diliman, Hagkan ang Gabi,” UP Diliman celebrated the meaningful season through its yearly Lantern Parade, which also became a venue for the university to creatively tackle socially relevant issues.

“This year’s theme expresses the struggle and dissent of its community, a hymn that serves as a beacon of direction amidst the darkness, a
familiar voice in the wilderness, a song with a melody that sparks hope
amidst a State that may be out of tune,” the university’s press release stated.

On Friday afternoon, December 16, different colleges of the university showcased their colorful floats and lanterns with the College of Fine Arts standing out as one of the crowd’s favorite as they give homage to Philippine comics; while others focused on political issues such as cardboard justice and the controversial burial of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The students of UP College of Fine Arts, a Hall of Famer of Lantern Parade, chose popular Filipino comic characters such as Zuma, Ikabod, Zaturnah, Lastikman, and Bondying as inspiration for their floats and lanterns this year.

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL), for this year’s Lantern Parade, created a zarzuela-inspired float. Jeff Giron, a professor and the college’s person in charge of production and conceptualization told InterAksyon, “CAL as a college, meron kaming theater program tapos meron silang mga musial plays.

SAMASA, an activist group, expressed dissent over historical revisionism and encourages everyone not to forget the atrocities of Martial Law period through a Voltes V-inspired float designed by multimedia artist Toym Leon Imao.

The role of the media amid social issues is what the College of Mass Communication tackled in their float entitled, “Liwanag sa Karimlan.”

UP Manila’s College of Public Health joins this year’s Lantern Parade with a float symbolizing the healthcare system of the country.

Jed Cueto, member of Kabataan Partylist and one of UP Manila’s College of Public Health student shared to InterAksyon, “Yung course namin ay nagpo-promote ng isang maayos at magandang healthcare sa Pilipinas.

The UP Center for Women and Gender Studies (UP CWGS) together with UP Gender Office, Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment, and UP Artists’ Circle Sorority chose Mebuyen, a Manobo bathala, as inspiration for their float.

Bernadette Neri, deputy director for training, outreach and extension program of UPCGWS told InterAksyon, “Si Mebuyen ay isang bathala ng mga Manobo.

The plight of the Lumads, LGBTs, farmers, students, and women became the inspiration for the university’s School of Statistics for their lantern.

James Alister Pangilinan, School of Statistics’ representative for the University Student Council said, “Yung statistics, meron syang mga advocacies concerning farmers, students, Lumads, workers, and women and also lgbt rights.
