BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The councilor of a northern Negros Occidental town and two of his companions were shot dead Friday morning.

News reports said Don Salvador Benedicto Councilor Eden Bacordo, Leah Mae Canoy and the two official’s still unidentified bodyguard were having breakfast in Barangay Lopez Jaena when the gunmen, armed with assault rifles and wearing hoods to conceal their identities, opened fire.

Authorities have yet to determine the motive for the killings.

But since last year there have been a number of killings and other violent incidents in the mountain town, some 47 kilometers east of Bacolod City, whose cool climate has made it a favorite location for vacation homes of well-to-do Negrosanons.
