Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former US President Bill Clinton and former State Secretary Hillary Clinton, was not amused by President Rodrigo Duterte’s joke about rape in a pep talk Friday to soldiers about to be deployed to Marawi City to fight the Maute group.
On her verified Twitter account, Clinton wrote, “Not funny. Ever,” as she shared a Tweet by New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker linking his followers to a story on the incident.
In response to a comment on her Tweet, she added: “Duterte is a murderous thug with no regard for human rights. It’s important to keep pointing that out and that rape is never a joke.”
Duterte had told the soldiers of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade that he would take responsibility for the consequences of martial law, which he had declared in Mindanao.
Then he quipped, “Pag naka-rape ka ng tatlo, aminin ko na akin ‘yun (If you rape three times, I’ll take the blame).”
Tanggol Bayi, an association of defenders of women’s rights, also issued a statement, saying rape was a heinous crime, and never a laughing matter.
It then shared a quote from Bayol Maguiales, a woman who had been raped during martial law under the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
“I asked the soldier if I could visit my father, who was imprisoned in a mosque. He said, ‘You may.’ After that, I got in his jeep and went to my father. On the way home, it was already dark, around 7:00 in the evening. The soldier asked me, ‘What now?’ And then he took advantage of me. Raped me. There wasn’t anything I could do,” Maguialos recalled.
