JESSICA ZAFRA | Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 Moviethon: Day 1: Woman seeks wife for her husband

No one expects Thy Womb to be one of the filmfest top-grossers. It may be hot stuff in foreign festivals, but in the MMFF it is the freak.

JESSICA ZAFRA | Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 Moviethon: Day 2: Monsters Inc.

As the movie trailer points out, 'Everything ends - except Shake, Rattle and Roll.' It never leaves us. Every year we can count on seeing another horror trilogy from Regal: they exist to convince us that the previous year's 'Shake, Rattle and Roll' wasn't as bad as we thought.

JESSICA ZAFRA | Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 Moviethon: Day 3: Red herrings in a bloody sauce

This will be short because the less you know about The Strangers, the more likely you are to enjoy it. In fact director Lawrence Fajardo and screenwriters John Bedia, JP Abellera and Enrico Santos spend the better part of the movie keeping us in the dark.

JESSICA ZAFRA | Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 Moviethon: Day 4: Babangon Ako At Kukurutin Kita

Vice Ganda, nee Jose Marie Viceral, is the reigning box-office star of Philippine cinema. You need look no further than the Sisterakas poster for confirmation of this: he is billed ahead of Kris Aquino and Ai Ai de las Alas.

JESSICA ZAFRA | Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 Moviethon: Day 5: Invaders from Planet Garbage

Shake, Rattle & Roll isn't the only movie series whose continued popularity boggles the mind. In 'Si Agimat, Si Enteng Kabisote at Si Ako', Vic Sotto and Bong Revilla join forces against dirty stinky aliens from a planet full of garbage. This movie certainly knows about garbage.

JESSICA ZAFRA | Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 Moviethon: Day 6: The battle for Dingdong's dingdong

In 'One More Try' - an unauthorized remake of the Chinese movie 'In Love We Trust' - the performances are good: the actors have to be real professionals to keep from bursting into laughter at their ridiculous dialogue.

JESSICA ZAFRA | Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 Moviethon: Day 7: Bonifacio was NOT a traitor

Though it is heartening to see history as a subject for popular culture, 'El Presidente' exemplifies what ails our nation. We have amnesia. Mark Meily casts Andres Bonifacio as a traitor. I do not doubt Meily's sincerity, but I have a problem with his history.

JESSICA ZAFRA | Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 Moviethon: Day 8: Sosy Problems - Refund! Refund!

GMA Films' Sosy Problems looks like it was thrown together out of available footage during a brownout. After the editors cobbled it together they realized they had no ending, so they got minor character to narrate an epilogue while they replayed scenes in black-and-white.
