Kulot's wake in Cainta
Mystery at the wake, as visitors join curious neighbors wondering if the body in the casket is really that of their Reynaldo "Kulot" de Gusman.

As a slew of curious neighbors milled about in the periphery, even an elder brother can’t be sure if the remains at the wake is that of Reynaldo “Kulot” de Guzman for whom the family is grieving.

While the parents have to be away to attend to further DNA testing in the effort to establish for certainty that it really is Kulot, at the basketball court of Anakpawis 2 in Cainta, Rizal, his elder brother, Edgardo, expressed his doubt.

“Hindi natin alam kung siya yung kapatid ko (We don’t know if he is my brother),” Edgardo told News5, pointing out that the face appears to be dissimilar.

What’s more, he added, the body in the casket appears to be smaller in build than Kulot, aside from the hair not being as curly as that of his late brother.

More tellingly, he pointed out, a picture of the body depicted an uncircumcised boy, which puzzled him no end and could throw the case into a tumbled tizzy.

It was their father who went to Gapan, Nueva Ecija, where the body was found, floating on Kabayo Creek, to make the identification at a mortician’s place.

A neighbor said: “I know the boy; he used to be an ambulant fish vendor. He was big. Not this small. I guess it’s possible Kulot is still alive.”

Another sibling could only echo the grim hope that their brother Kulot is, indeed, not dead. (With additional reportage from Faith del Mundo, News5)
