COTABATO CITY, Philippines — The town of Sultan Kudarat in Maguindanao was declared in a state of calamity Monday after some 20,000 residents when overflowing rivers flooded 16 villages.
On Tuesday, the state weather bureau forecast cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms over Mindanao and the Central Visayas and Negros Island regions.
Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms will prevail over Metro Manila and the rest of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration added.
Sultan Kudarat Mayor Datu Shameem Mastura said the flooding in his town has so far damaged some P9 million worth of agricultural products.
The local government has begun distributing relief to flood-affected residents even as Mastura said a dike built along the Simuay River has prevented more villages from being inundated.
Earlier, the town of Mother Kabuntalan also declared a state of calamity due to floods.
Floods have also affected the towns of Datu Piang, Datu Salibo and Sultan sa Baronguis.
