MANILA, Philippines – An almost 600-meter stretch of the westbound section of Quezon Avenue that has been widened by a just completed drainage improvement project was inaugurated Friday, November 3, by Public Works Secretary Mark Villar and Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Pernia.

The P62-million project saw the 571-lineal meter stretch from Elliptical Road to Agham Road widened from four to six lanes.

It also features a 5.3 by 3-meter reinforced concrete box culvert, much larger than the old 3 by 2.5-meter culvert, which will increase the capacity of the Tanque Creek by 112 percent.

The two additional lanes can accommodate at least 164 public utility jeeps, 427 private cars and 321 motorcycles per hour during the rush hour.

Earlier, the DPWH implemented a similar project on the eastbound section of Quezon Avenue, from Timog Avenue to EDSA.

Other flood control projects are in the works, among these those at Katipunan Avenue extension and Bonifacio Global City.

Pernia said the newly opened road section is one of 5,600 minor projects, worth P1 trillion, to be undertaken over five years.
